Some help and others destroy!

by @ 10:37 pm. Filed under Nuts on Parade, The Truth Shall Set you Free!

Officials in Johnson City, TN tried to help students at East Tennessee State University by denying one of their elected favorite artist Ludacris use of Freedom Hall for a planned concert. They cited security concerns as the reason for the denial. (Personally I would not mind if they denied him access simply because he is the embodiment of the word obscene.) Despite this good deed on the part of the town’s elected officials the school’s officials are determined to be facilitators for the smut their students crave!

Ludacris May Still Perform at Tenn. School

Ludacris might perform a homecoming concert at East Tennessee State University after all, despite the city’s refusal to let him perform at Freedom Hall.

The university is trying to hold the concert at the school’s Mini Dome instead.

The school’s homecoming committee booked Ludacris after raising the student activity fee from $4 per semester to $20 last school year to accommodate such events. Students were polled about performers they would like to see in concert, and Ludacris was the first on the resulting list who agreed to appear.

City officials cited security concerns in denying the Ludicris performance.

What some people won’t do for a dose of smut! 🙄

You would expect a college to show a little responsibility and character by also keeping a trash artist off their campus. But then again you would hope people in college would want something better than a trash mouthed artist. The women of Spellman college showed they are a bit wiser in this regard.

There are other voices crying out in the wilderness of foolishness. Although he is a Liberal in many respects, director Spike Lee sees the problem that is growing in Black culture.

…”gangsta rap,” a genre of music he described as genocide.

The culture promoted by gangsta rap, Lee said, has convinced African American youths to dumb down in order to be accepted – that being smart is no longer an option.

“No one, growing up, said, `I want to be a pimp,” Lee told the crowd of about 1,500. “Young black girls – no one growing up said, `I want to be a `ho.’ A lot of it comes from the imagery.”

Lee, 48, encouraged the students in the audience to work hard and follow their dreams, no matter how farfetched.

Tarah Scott, a sophomore and a fan of gangsta rap, said Lee’s thoughts about the music spurred her to re-evaluate the genre.

It appears Spike Lee like Dr. Bill Cosby is trying to act as a counterweight to the negative and help people who are actively in the process of destroying themselves.

And Bill Cosby is still out there himself trying to bring about change.

He also addressed Detroit’s high crime rate.

“It isn’t easy to … hear about Detroit,” he said. “These things can be fixed. It takes work. …

“I’m … black and I’m letting this happen,” he added. “Why didn’t I do anything? Because … I thought somebody else was going to do it.”

Besides Detroit, Cosby’s tour has made stops including as Baltimore, Cleveland, Atlanta and Springfield, Mass.

To those countering the trash of artist like Nelly and Ludacris I must say keep up the good work!

(On a side note, I have to say whenever I mention Bill Cosby I can’t help but think of the many accusations of sexual abuse that have been made against him. I would be foolish to say every single one was a lie. Part of me wants Cosby under a jail! But given he’s never been found guilty of a thing, I am glad that he is out doing good work these days.)

update (10/11/2005 1:01AM ET): After making this post I read a very interesting post by Cobb that is a nice addition to this. Because he makes an excellent point that anyone who actually has gotten their hands dirty trying to help folks in need has learned the hard way. You can’t save them all! Some will make a positive change and others are just doomed! We must accept that there is going to be some loss.
